Upcoming release sample: PLANTWISE

“What is this world coming to, when healers are attacked with impunity?” Glynna’s light dimmed and she floated away from Arden and Dylon a few steps. “What kind of a fool is Durmad, that he thought his magic was strong enough to overpower Yeshen’s laws, and his tools wouldn’t suffer?”

“He doesn’t care about his tools. Grandfather is convinced the attack was to kill him, perhaps us both, not to capture and enslave us.”

“Perhaps …” Arden shuddered and the grass under her feet waved as if a breeze blew hard against it. “Auntie, what if that was the goal, to kill Prince Ambrose? What if there was someone waiting to take his Gifting before he died? Can someone steal a Gifting, if the holder is so badly injured they’re about to die, and … I don’t know … they’re tricked into giving the Gifting to the wrong person?”

“I’ve never heard of such a thing, but that sounds like something Durmad is nasty enough, desperate enough, arrogant enough, to attempt.” Sparks snapped around her and she shuddered. “What is this world coming to?” She reached out to Dylon again. “Tell Ambrose to be doubly careful. Not just of himself, but you. After all, you are his obvious heir, and whoever wants to claim his Gifting when he is gone has to get you out of the way. If not kill you outright, then at the very least separate the two of you long enough to finish their plan.”

“I will never leave his side,” the young man promised.

Upcoming Release: LIARS' QUEST

THE START OF A NEW SERIES
Have you heard the episodes on the Ye Olde Dragon's Library podcast?
Plenty of time to catch up!!

THE ENCHANTED CASTLE ARCHIVES

The enchanted castle lies somewhere in the enchanted forest, which touches all kingdoms.

At one time or another. There's no predicting when the portal into the forest will open.

Getting in is difficult.

Getting out is even harder.

The castle moves about in the forest, needing an anchor. And a princess.

The forest moves from kingdom to kingdom.

Until two wanderers stumble inside, and meet in their separate quests to break curses and find answers.

LIARS' QUEST

An orphan servant, Ash successfully masqueraded as a boy until she was nearly 15 -- then a spoiled brat nobleman's daughter accused her of assault.

A quixotic justiciar got involved, and with both girls revealed as liars, sentenced them to a quest. Ostensibly, the one who succeeded in accomplishing the list of deeds would be proven the innocent, injured party.

Ash fled to avoid being captured by the spoiled brat's servants and forced to do all the quest work for both of them. Along the way, she stumbled in and out of trouble and learned a great deal of magic -- including the magic born into her blood.

Her traveling companions: Fang the bunny, who complicated things when he was only partially turned into a vampire, and a spirit ring, to allow the justiciar to spy on her adventures. When the ring decided to become Ash's friend, then things got interesting.

Off the Bookshelf: THE GIRL WHO DRANK THE MOON, by Kelly Barnhhill

Narrated by Christina Moore

Audiobook

Delightful. Beautiful world building and word weaving. Touches of wry humor, and clever commentary on the tragedy that takes over when the people who are trusted to watch out for us aren't worth that trust, and the suffering of those who are willing to say no to the status quo.

More than that, this is a beautiful story of family, no matter how odd and unlikely. Xan the witch, Glerk the swamp monster, and Fyrian the tiny dragon find themselves raising Luna, a child who was taken from her parents to offer as a sacrifice, the payment for the safety of the people in the gloomy, shadowed village called the Protectorate.

Luna was accidentally fed moonlight as a baby, and filled with magic. Xan took extreme measures to bind the magic until Luna was old enough to control it, and not accidentally destroy or remake everything around her. When that day came, the lives of the people most intimately involved with that long ago useless sacrifice all came together. How did the story end? Read it, or listen to it. And be ready to cry and laugh and sigh.

Tragic and beautiful and whimsical and finished far too soon.

Upcoming Release Sample: PLANTWISE

“Grandfather believes they were sent by Durmad,” Dylon said, when Arden and Glynna met privately with him that evening, before the festivities started. They had seen him walking through the gardens and hurried from Arden’s room to intercept him. “There was warning. An old seer Grandfather visited several times a year warned him that black clouds were following him, and he should take a different route home. We tried, but then a boy came from the next village, begging us to come, there had been a dreadful accident at the mill. The brigands attacked us in a valley just outside the village, rolling huge boulders down on us, separating us. Grandfather broke a leg and several ribs, and he was bleeding badly enough, he lost consciousness. When help came …” He shuddered and his eyes were shadowed while his face went pale.

“You’ve never seen the vengeance meted out on those who violate the laws of magic and charity, have you?” Glynna asked. She rested a hand on his shoulder, lightly enough it didn’t go through him.

“Grandfather told me such things have happened.” Dylon shook his head and his throat worked, as if he fought sickness. “Birds dove down from the sky and from the trees, and the trees themselves twisted and lashed out at the men, and I thought for a moment they would uproot themselves and come running. And there was a bear—” He caught his breath. “Those men didn’t seem to notice as the bear ripped into them and the animals overpowered them and they were beaten unconscious. And they died. They shouldn’t have died. There was more magic at work, killing them, to keep them from betraying who sent them. And when we asked at the village, no one sent for us. The boy wasn’t one of theirs.”

Upcoming release sample: PLANTWISE

“That wouldn’t be wise,” Dylon hurried to say, as King Alfred smiled and nodded. “If the roads between kingdoms aren’t safe for a revered healer, who should be sacrosanct, can they be safe for a princess who could be kidnapped, perhaps taking all the farming wealth of Westerland in ransom?”

From the frowns the king and Comyn exchanged, Arden had the clear impression they weren’t aware of such danger. Then again, Ambrose’s injury was news for them.

“My grandfather fully intends to come visit you as soon as he is well,” he continued, and held out the sealed parchment packet. “I will leave you to read in private.”

“You will stay and enjoy the festivities this evening, won’t you?” Queen Elise asked, as Dylan bowed and turned to head to the door.

“Thank you, Highness. That is very kind.” His gaze locked with Arden’s, and she flushed as she realized that her answer was important to him.

“Yes, please. Do you like to dance?” She nearly giggled when Dylon flushed and he gave a tiny shrug.

“I don’t get many chances, but yes, I do.” He grinned. “I’m not sure how good I am.”
